RARE EARTH PROJECT
MILL DECONTAMINATION & DEMOLITION
USA Environment, LP (USA) was awarded a two-phase, three million dollar contract to perform Decontamination, Decommissioning, and Demolition of the Old Mill and Floatation Plant Facilities in Mountain Pass, California.
During Phase One, USA conducted decontamination of the magnetic separator building magnets and components to meet Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and State of California radiological free release criteria for normally occurring radioactive materials (NORM). USA assisted the client in locating a buyer for the recovery of $154,000.00 from the Magnetic Separator Building components. All other demolition scrap materials were sized to manageable pieces, staged on site, segregated by category and recycled. Additionally, all resulting concrete debris was sized, loaded and transported to a designated area for storage.
Phase Two consists of the decontamination, decommissioning, demolition, on site transportation and staging of the Old Mill Building, Floatation Building, Boiler House, Chemical Reagent Structure and tank, Dryer Area, Silo Truck Area and Packaging Warehouse area. USA conducted dry and wet decontamination activities for the Old Mill and Floatation buildings. All resulting solids and liquids were containerized and turned over to the client for management under its current waste program. USA assisted in the asset recovery program with expected revenues of $160,000.00.
